Urban Design Week

Launch of  Urban Design Compendium 2
by English Partnerships

At English Partnerships, we view good urban design and sustainability as being interdependent. Well connected places that are safe and convenient to walk around, and well managed with appropriate density to sustain a mix of uses and public transport are successful places. As such, people will want to live, work and spend time in these places.

At English Partnerships, we work with many accomplished urban designers and masterplanners to help deliver this goal, ensuring that we remain at the forefront of urban design
in the UK.

We share best practice through the published Urban Design Compendiums which build on the principles of urban design to focus on the delivery of quality places.

To view our new website summarising the contents of both compendiums and to request a copy please visit  www.urbandesigncompendium.co.uk

  Places and Spaces
Main Gallery Exhibition: 11 September – 7 October

Great places can be large scale civic spaces, but they can also be something more intimate. A courtyard, a street, an alley or even a car park can lift the spirit and provide a positive experience to our urban existence.

The Architecture Centre, the Bristol & Bath Branch of the Royal Institute of British Architects and Departure Lounge have come together to present an exhibit that explores the varied notions of ‘place’ and ‘space’ by using examples of recent, local projects that have created or redefined public spaces and places.

Question for debate:
'Money for nothing but your conscience is free’: High rise living getting you down!

Efficient planning and design is now about ever increasing densities and the layering of uses within the townscape. This has seen a renaissance of the apartment or flat within our urban areas but is this creating high quality sustainable neighbourhoods? In some cases they are high priced, low specification living solutions which do not respond to the family ideal. Are they right in every circumstance and location ranging from the city core to the suburb? With resources increasingly tight in land and materials, buildings are a more permanent reminder of today’s fashion. Is the building industry as fickle as the fashion industry – will apartments be ‘old hat’ in ten years like fondue parties and shoulder pads?

An urban design training programme for London - 2007/2008

Commencing 25th September 2007

London needs good urban design. As a world city, it competes with cities renowned for the quality of their public spaces, streets, parks and buildings. This drive for quality needs to happen in the suburbs as much as in the tourist hot-spots. All London’s citizens deserve to live, work, learn and play in well designed, easy to use places.
